I overslept this morning and after dropping my son off at school in a driving cold rain I hit Dunkin Donuts and returned home fortified with sugar and caffeine. Roused from my stupor by my guilty pleasures I began browsing my email when a ZDnet article grabbed my attention: Why Windows 7 Should Be Free. I admit I'm sometimes a sucker for hyperventilating blog titles, but the logic was immediately apparent to me and I raced through the article as sugar, caffeine, a brilliant idea, and the sweet smell of revenge coalesced into a sudden desire to DO something. "I'm mad as "H - E - double L and I'm not gonna take it any more", I said to myself.
Within seconds my fingers were typing GoDaddy and before I knew what happened I had purchased http://www.windows7classaction.com, .net, .info, .org, and .mobl. My orgy with the GoDaddy girl had cost me $33. If I should ever stand before a court of law for my actions it will undoubtedly be defined as a "crime of passion". My wife, in contrast, simply labeled it "idiotic".
But enough about me. "Why should Windows 7 Be Free?", you ask. Well, if you have had the misfortune of buying Vista in the past three years (especially pre-Sp1) you should already understand by now that Vista is a verifiable klunker. Windows Vista is the worst upgrade from Microsoft since "ME". Even Microsoft realizes this.
But don't take my word for it. Here is what Steve Ballmer said about Windows 7 -
"it's Windows Vista, a lot better"
Still not convinced that the Big Cheese at MS agrees with me? Ok, he also said the following...
Read Gregg Keizer's excellent article on Ballmer's comments in Oct. 2008 here"Windows Vista is good, Windows 7 is Windows Vista with clean-up in user interface [and] improvements in performance"
While I'm glad to hear that Ballmer expects Windows 7 to improve on Vista's performance, that isn't exactly setting a very high bar considering the fact that XP still routinely out-performs Vista.
So this begs the question... if Vista is a lemon that Windows 7 "makes lemonade with" why are Microsoft's faithful customers being forced to buy what we should have had three years ago? Back in the day the Philadelphia 76ers launched a campaign for Philly fans, "We owe you one, we owe you 1!". Finally Moses Malone and Dr. J delivered on that promise - late, but better late than never. So I respectfully submit to Microsoft and Ballmer - "You Owe Us One". How about selling me Windows 7 for ONE DOLLAR? Am I Don Quixote for the new millennium? Perhaps. But maybe if enough people join me we can wake up Ballmer and Microsoft before it is too late. Trust me Steve. I really don't like Vista. Really. A Mac is looking better to me everyday. Please send flowers before it is too late.

I agree vista for windows 7 should be a free up graded
The whiney moroms sueing Microsoft in the VistaCapable law suit have won a "victory" of sorts, in that the court has ordered that I be deposed and testify!
My people sent them a letter last month where I told them "I know nothing, I see nothing!"
I feel like this is becoming sort of a witch hunt, you know, "catch the rich CEO guy in a blatant lie" kinda thing. I told them what they needed to know. What ever happened to the good old days of the privilaged rich?
I give more to charity in a week than that judge makes in a year! I do good stuff!
What's wrong with this great country of ours when the "I'm too busy and important" excuse no longer works?
Well, if they want ME in court, they are gonna' get ME in court! All I can say is that court will never be the same again!
it seems that win 7 is a service pack for vista premiuim. many of us dislike and await for service pack to fix many of the ailments in vista
Why hasn't anyone started a class action suit regarding the fact that Microsoft leaves no alternatives in OS for PC manufacturers (monopoly), and that they put out a widely known inferior product, spent millions on "learn how to drive the clunker" campaigns, and now are saying "Windows 7 has solved all their OS problems"? They even admit in their advertisements that Vista was problemed. This would qualify for lemon laws, as would be translated directly from auto lemon laws, and therefore a class action suit would be viable for all who can show proof of purchase of Windows Vista. Steve Ballmer privilaged lips can kiss my working-class arse, because, thanks to truth in advertising, they are primed for the class action suit of the century. So who's going to start the paperwork?
Do you actually have any legal class action lawsuit setup? I've bought several PC's and a copy of Vista unfortantly all before the "free upgrade to 7". I feel completely cheated by Microsoft. I feel everyone with Vista period should be allowed a free upgrade to Windows 7. Not this $120 upgrade cost they seem to think they are entitled to. I believe they should be required by law to release a service pack to Vista that essentially upgrades it to Windows 7. Since I paid my money to Beta test Windows 7 for them which seems to be all Vista was to Microsoft. Vista was a failed attempt on Microsofts part for a new OS and because of the "bad press" it got they had to release a new OS with a new name but its not new. Its Vista with a blanket pulled over your eyes. They ran a huge marketing campain about lying to people about Vista calling it Longhorn or something if you remember where everyone thought it was so great. Thats all Windows 7 is.
I don't personally have the means to hire a lawyer and take on Microsoft. But maybe somebody out there does, or we'll get a lawyer to take up the cause. Making noise can certainly influence Microsoft. If they offered a special for upgrading Vista owners of say $50 I think they would avoid a lot of poential future trouble.
